Question of the Week
Question

I'd like to rent a friend's airplane for flight training. Is this possible without the complexity of creating a partnership, co-ownership, or other legal entity and if so, how would insurance best be handled?
Answer
It is possible to rent a privately owned aircraft for flight training, but keep in mind that the standard personal/business use policy does not cover renting the airplane out to others, so your friend may need an upgraded insurance policy. Also, you would need a separate renters insurance policy. It is advisable to have a solid, customized rental contract between you and the owner, which should be handled by a knowledgeable pro who knows both aviation law and the contract laws of your state. AOPA's Pilot Protection Services staff attorneys can advise. Join the discussion >
