Final Exam
Question

I am considering renting an airplane from a friend to train in, and wondering if this can be done without creating a formal partnership, co-ownership arrangement, or some other kind of legal entity, and how AOPA might be able to help.
Answer
Insurance is a big issue, here. Flight schools carry different insurance coverage than individual owners typically do, and most policies would not extend coverage to aircraft rented for flight training. The aircraft owner would probably want you to pay the additional cost of the coverage that flight schools typically have. You will also want to have a written rental agreement, and additional insurance to protect yourself. AOPA's Pilot Protection Services Legal Services Plan can help you draft the necessary agreements. Laws vary from state to state, so you should beware of "boilerplate" rental contracts you may find online. Join the discussion >
