Maryland bills extend tax break for aircraft owners

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore signed H.B.557 and S.B.574 into law, extending a sales tax exemption on aircraft parts through June 30, 2030. AOPA and the Maryland Aviation Council worked together to gain the extension for an additional five years, which will help keep airports and maintenance jobs in the state competitive.

The bills, sponsored by Del. Chris Adams (R.-District 37B) and Sen. Paul Corderman (R-District 2), bring the total benefit for aircraft owners to 10 years of 6-percent savings on parts and components installed on aircraft. The benefit is available to all aircraft owners acquiring maintenance in Maryland regardless of where they reside.

Moore signed the bills on May 16, less than a week after AOPA’s National Celebration of General Aviation Flyover in Washington, D.C., for which he designated May 11 National General Aviation Flyover Day.

“AOPA thanks Gov. Moore and the Maryland Aviation Administration, which was a presenting sponsor for the flyover, for their continued support of general aviation across the state,” said AOPA Eastern Regional Manager Sean Collins. “Extending the sales tax exemption solidifies the competitiveness of Maryland’s aviation system, boosting business and jobs.”

AOPA’s ability to advocate for these targeted exemptions is made possible only through the continued support of AOPA members. “We are very proud of the fact that the savings afforded to aircraft owners vastly outweighs the annual cost of an AOPA membership,” noted Collins.
