Airport Support Network holds annual meeting

When a general aviation airport faces a new threat of access curtailment, encroachment by development on surrounding land, or even outright closure, the AOPA Airport Support Network volunteer frequently is the individual who sounds the earliest alarm.

Leadership of the 21-year-old Airport Support Network is key to its reach and its strength, and each year the Airport Support Network Board of Advisors convenes at AOPA headquarters in Frederick, Maryland, to discuss strategic goals, as it did on Nov. 15.

“The Airport Support Network has been instrumental in helping AOPA promote, protect, and defend airports around the country, and our board of advisors is helping us steer the program, especially with recruiting over the upcoming years,” said Mike Ginter, AOPA vice president of airports and state advocacy. “We appreciate their decades of experience and their passion for airport advocacy.”

At the annual meeting, Guy Rouelle, Vermont’s former state aviation director and the Airport Support Network volunteer at Burlington International Airport, was confirmed as a new board member representing the Eastern region. He replaces Graeme Smith of Rhode Island.

The board of advisors also includes Keith Craigo, the volunteer for Addison Airport in Texas; Jim Johnson, the volunteer for Bessemer Municipal Airport in Alabama; Euel Kinsey, the volunteer for Detroit, Michigan’s Coleman A. Young Municipal Airport; Adam White, the volunteer for Nenana, Alaska Municipal Airport; and Steve Wolf, the volunteer at Northern Colorado Regional Airport in Colorado.

More than 2,000 AOPA members volunteer to protect and promote the general aviation airports that are economic drivers for many small towns and communities across the country. The volunteers also work with AOPA’s government affairs staff and regional managers to inform local pilots about AOPA’s advocacy work in Washington, D.C., and in state capitals around the country. AOPA is actively recruiting Airport Support Network volunteers at hundreds of airports across the nation. You can find out who the volunteer is for your airport or apply to volunteer on the AOPA website.
