Final Exam
Question

Can two student pilots fly together in a Cherokee 140? Neither one is really a passenger, since they are both pilots, so I think it should be fine. Is that correct?
Answer
No. Although both are student pilots, a Cherokee 140 requires only one pilot, so one student is the pilot and the other student on board must be considered a passenger. Since FAR 61.89(a) prohibits a student pilot from carrying a passenger, two student pilots cannot fly together.

This question and answer were provided by the aviation experts in AOPA's Pilot Information Center. Did you know that student pilots who join AOPA are three times more likely to complete their flight training? Membership includes unlimited access to aviation information by phone (800-USA-AOPA, weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern time) or from AOPA Online.
