Plane Spotter
Mark of the Max
Mark of the Max
Veteran plane spotters know that the look of aircraft types evolves with stretched fuselages, bigger engines, and improved aerodynamic efficiency. Modifications of the Boeing 737 quickly followed the type's first flight in 1967, making some variants identifiable by features such as engine nacelles with flattened bottoms, and a variety of winglet designs. When it resumes flying, the currently grounded Boeing 737 Max may be spottable by its AT (advanced technology) winglets that incorporate a distinctively downward-directed airfoil. Look for winglets that resemble a sideways letter V. (Photo courtesy of Boeing Co.)
Final Exam
Question

I will start flying at night with my students now that it is getting dark earlier. However, I have not flown at night for more than 90 days. Do I need to make three night takeoffs and landings to be legal to teach my students at night?
Answer
No. On an instructional flight, your student is not considered a passenger, and the requirement to make three night takeoffs and landings does not apply. That said, it is always better to be proficient in the areas you are teaching.

This question and answer were provided by the aviation experts in AOPA's Pilot Information Center. Did you know that student pilots who join AOPA are three times more likely to complete their flight training? Membership includes unlimited access to aviation information by phone (800-USA-AOPA, weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern time) or from AOPA Online.
