AOPA President Mark Baker enjoys talking about the positive health of general aviation, especially during the challenges caused by the coronavirus pandemic. He recently joined SocialFlight Live! host Jeff Simon in a wide-ranging discussion.
The conversation covered several topics related to the state of GA, how it has held up well in a challenging year, and what AOPA has been doing to help preserve its health. Here are some highlights from Baker’s conversation.
Health of GA:
“I have never seen more interest in the general aviation world. Whether it’s buying, staying current, flying clubs, or just seeing family and friends, GA is one of the things that seems to be coming out ahead from the health crisis.”
Business at the airport:
“The FBOs I’ve been talking with say business is up and avgas sales are strong. Many are also doing well with their flight schools, although instruction may take a different form from just the new student: pilots going for additional ratings and those looking to make aviation a profession.”
Taking to the skies:
“Just getting our planes out of the hangar and have them do what they do best—that’s been fun, whether just going for a ride or taking a few friends along.”
The future of GA:
“We are going to see general aviation be accessed more for business and pleasure. We’ve seen many people avoiding the airlines and deciding to fly private or a charter. I think we will see that trend stay for some time.”
