Final Exam
Question

I remember acronyms for runway braking reports like BRAG (good) and BRAN (nil) from many years ago. Are these acronyms still in use?
Answer
No. Today there is a runway condition code matrix paired with a corresponding pilot reported braking action. Numbers range from 6 for a dry runway and good braking to 0 for an ice/slush/snow-covered runway with braking action reported as nil. For more information, see the Aeronautical Information Manual's sections 4-3-8 and 4-3-9.

This question and answer were provided by the aviation experts in AOPA's Pilot Information Center. Did you know that student pilots who join AOPA are three times more likely to complete their flight training? Membership includes unlimited access to aviation information by phone (800-USA-AOPA, weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern time) or from AOPA Online.
