There really are not very many active civilian pilots in the United States—only 593,499 on December 31, 2014, as estimated by the FAA. That’s a mere 0.186 percent of the 2014 U.S. population (318.9 million). Put another way, only about one person in 537 holds a pilot certificate. Despite the small numbers, however, it’s often surprising to find that people you never dreamed might be pilots, actually are pilots. For example:
