Question of the Week
Question

I have seen pilots dump sumped fuel on the ground or into containers on the ramp. Can the fuel be put back into the fuel tanks if it is clean? I have heard the argument that doing so could reintroduce contaiminants. If the contaiminants are so scarce that you can't detect them in the sample, how could they make a difference compared to what is in the tank?
Answer
Dumping fuel on the ground isn't just a bad idea, it's against the law (Clean Water Act of 1987). A GATS jar is a great way to check fuel and separate out particulate and water contamination, allowing you to return sampled fuel to your tank safely. GATS jars are available from many online pilot and aircraft supply outlets. Otherwise, find the dump can at your airport and put the samples there—some airports use this fuel to run the grass mowers.
