Probing Barry
When the first hurricane of the 2019 Atlantic hurricane season made landfall along the Louisiana coast July 13, its vital signs and an assessment of its precipitous potential were already on record with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. That's because NOAA had flown Kermit, a Doppler radar-equipped four-engine Lockheed WP–3D Orion turboprop hurricane hunter aircraft, into the Gulf of Mexico to gather atmospheric data as the storm that would become Hurricane Barry approached. Kermit coordinates efforts with sister ship Miss Piggy to collect more complete storm data. (Photo courtesy of NOAA.)

Question

Why are there no cloud-clearance and visibility requirements published for Class A airspace?
Answer
The answer is simple: In Class A airspace (between 18,000 feet msl and Flight Level 600) VFR operations are prohibited, and an instrument rating and an IFR clearance are required for entry.

This question and answer were provided by the aviation experts in AOPA's Pilot Information Center.
