Question of the Week
Question

I've always understood that when you declare an emergency you can disregard the regulations, where necessary, to address that emergency. Where is the regulation that covers that?
Answer
According to 14 CFR 91.3(b), you may deviate from Part 91 regulations to the extent needed to meet an in-flight emergency requiring immediate action. Check out AOPA's numerous articles and subject reports covering many aspects of emergencies and emergency procedures. If you ever have to declare an emergency you may want to file an Aviation Safety Reporting System report (also known as a NASA report) as well.

This question and answer were provided by AOPA's Pilot Information Center. Got a question for our technical services staff? Contact AOPA.
